                                                                                  BROKEN LEG FAMILY

In late 2005 we found a family of 6 living in almost sub-human conditions north of Batticaloa.  We affectionately call them, "Broken Leg Family."  They had lost their home to the tsunami and were living in a tent made of palm leaves.  Their three boys at home were all unable to walk due to an unknown illness. The father, a fisherman, was also crippled.  After losing his boat to the waves, and unable to feed his family he tried his hand at coconut harvesting, which requires climbing the 30’ tall slippery trees without assistance.  He fell, breaking his leg in several places.  Care for these four invalids fell to the mother and young daughter, Priya.  The mother worked by making clay bowls which she sold for 3 cents each.

We worked to help their immediate needs by supplying wheelchairs, toilet facilities, food and medical care.  We eventually moved them into a house we rented for $15 per month.  The house was in Batticaloa town which made access to services much easier.  We placed Priya in an orphanage nearby so she could be cared for and attend school, coming home on week-ends.  The father has since recovered sufficiently that he is able to begin work again.

Over the years we have helped the family regularly including a flock of chickens, medical care for the boys and special schooling for Priya.  Sadly,  in 2015, the boys each died a few months apart from each other.
